The moment we walked in, we were brought back to a time when bathrooms were built out of necessity, not luxury. The small tub dominated the room, making the whole space seem tight and unwelcoming. Upon closer inspection, we noticed that the updates lacked consistency, with no real flow or design intent; the result was a patchwork that made the small space feel even smaller. It was evident that introducing a sleek, new walk-in shower could revolutionize the room and give it a sense of openness that it was sorely lacking.

Setting the new priorities

As we set out to reimagine a space that had not been touched since it was built, our choices were guided by the homeowners' passion for contemporary design and a minimalist aesthetic. Taking out the old allowed us to rethink the floorplan for more than just a shower—we added a larger sink, a more spacious vanity, and a statement mirror to highlight the new, open feel of the room. Our design honored the elegance and simplicity of the era, ensuring that every element served both style and purpose.

In the final stages of our remodel, we settled on a design that would stand the test of time—choosing a black-and-white theme not only for its timeless appeal but also to create a dynamic contrast to the room. For the family, safety was as crucial as style, prompting the choice of non-slip mosaic tiles to ensure a secure yet stylish floor. The installation of sleek black marble baseboards and pencil liners provided the perfect finishing touch, marrying luxury with the room's newfound elegance.

Why documentation is important!

Do you know why I like this photo so much? Simple answer. Look at the vanity. On top of it is our “Red Book”, opened up to the “to scale drawing” of the shower tile. Our crew is using the drawing exactly how we intended it to be used – as a blueprint to ensure the tile and details are installed exactly as drawn!! Thank you to Victor Raynes, our CAD draftsman for the drawing and Marco Maranhoe, our skilled crew chief for the actual work! I love it when a plan comes together!

Mark has been in residential remodeling for the last 40 years. He started his career as a carpenter and evolved into his own business of remodeling.
